First snow to fall from Washington to Boston
>> Saturday, December 5, 2009
The season's first significant snowfall is set to take place today into tonight up and down the I95 corridor.
A developing coastal storm will swing north and move up the eastern Seaboard today spreading precipitation from south to north across the eastern half of the region this morning.
Snow is already breaking out this morning in the Appalachians of Tennessee and North Carolina where several inches of snow can be expected before the snow tapers off later on this afternoon.
By this afternoon colder air will begin to infiltrate the region on cooling winds from the north. What will start out as rain or a rain snow mix will change over to snow from Virginia northward into New England.
The heaviest snow totals from this storm will be found generally just west of I-95. Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York will see snow accumulations on the order of 1 to 3 inches with some of their western suburbs receiving slightly more snow.
Further north places like Boston and Providence will see snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches with slightly higher amounts possible just to the west of those locations.
